Centers of Excellence

In 2009, RZHRG received a five-year grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to establish Centers of Excellence(COE) in Couples Voluntary Counseling and Testing (CVCT) in both Rwanda and Zambia. This has enabled RZHRG to train other countries in CVCT strategies. Governmental and non-governmental organizations have responded enthusiastically to the availability of quality instructional materials and strategies for CVCT implementation, while individual providers have welcomed the practicum training.

The fundamental objective of the COE is to provide expert training and assistance to countries and organizations wishing to implement, manage, promote or evaluate efforts to integrate CVCT into their HIV/AIDS prevention services. The RZHRG Centers of Excellence work plan combines education, training, and advocacy efforts.

  • The RZHRG model provides tools and templates to facilitate the management of CVCT services and recordkeeping.
  • Lectures and practical training are delivered via workshops and practicum experiences both on-site at the COE and in host-country facilities
  • Advocacy efforts include international, regional, and national meetings, as well as outreaches and communications that generate exposure for CVCT

RZHRG sites in Rwanda and Zambia have hosted envoys of numerous African countries, training them on CVCT approaches for their own populations. With the establishment of COE, ZEHRP has trained people from 137 different organizations around the world. The volume of requests for training continues to grow, mirroring a corresponding interest in inexpensive prevention methods. By increasing the number of organizations trained in this strategy, CVCT has the potential to be scaled up in many African countries with high HIV/AIDS rates, and could help prevent more than half of all new adult HIV infections.
